The Broadway Revival

Playwright John-Michael Tebelak and composer Stephen Schwartz created Godspell in 1971 as an upbeat musical based on the Gospel of Matthew. CAST’s production is the version used in the Broadway revival in 2012. The show is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

The songs

Schwartz’s songs for Godspell include several numbers in which he set standard lyrics from the Episcopal hymnal to original arrangements with contemporary melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation. These include “Save the People”, “Day By Day”, “Bless the Lord”, and “All Good Gifts”. In addition, he derived the lyrics for “On the Willows” from Psalm 137, and “Light of the World” and “Alas for You” from the Gospel of Matthew.

Community connection

During Act II of Godspell, Jesus sings a song called "Beautiful City". The song inspired us to celebrate how our Hunterdon County neighbors help to create a beautiful community, so we created a slide show of local volunteers from various organizations that will be included in our production. Candid shots of the activities of service groups such as America’s Grow-A-Row, Life Choices’ “Grandma’s House” and the MLK Day of Service are included in the presentation.
